Faculty of Natural Sciences

About the Faculty

The Faculty of Natural Sciences (FNS) was established by Order No. RD-32/21.04.2000 of the Rector of University “Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov” – Burgas, pursuant to Article 2 of the Council of Ministers’ Decree of 24.03.2000, Paragraph 60, Article 1 of the Transitional and Final Provisions of the Higher Education Act, and a decision of the Academic Council dated 13.04.2000.

The Faculty of Natural Sciences brings together the departments responsible for providing fundamental education in the fields of natural sciences (physics and chemistry), mathematics, and informatics for students from all academic programs of the university in areas such as chemical technologies, chemical engineering, biotechnology, electronics, computer systems and technologies, general engineering, and others. As of February 2020, the Faculty employs 41 academic staff members, including 20 habilitated lecturers, among whom are 6 professors and 14 associate professors.

The Faculty offers education in four bachelor’s and five master’s programs in the professional field 4.2. Chemical Sciences, which received a new six-year program accreditation from the National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency (NEAA) in 2019. Since 2019, the Faculty of Natural Sciences has also provided doctoral education in the PhD programs “Inorganic Chemistry” and “Ecology and Environmental Protection”, accredited in the same year.

The research interests of the Faculty’s academic staff are mainly focused on natural sciences (physics and chemistry), environmental protection (air, natural and wastewater, soils), mathematics, information technologies, pedagogical sciences, chemical engineering, and chemical technologies.

The research activities of the Faculty’s academic staff are an integral part of the Strategy for the Development of Research Activities at University “Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov” – Burgas for the period 2017–2025, adopted by the Academic Council. They are aimed at conducting high-quality fundamental and innovative scientific research with applied relevance in priority areas outlined in the National Strategy for the Development of Scientific Research in the Republic of Bulgaria 2017–2030.

These activities include participation in national and international research programs; implementation of projects funded by national and international organizations; preparation of expert assessments; provision of scientific and commercial services; and other research-related activities. The results of the Faculty’s research are disseminated through presentations at international scientific conferences, symposia, and scientific sessions, as well as through publications in specialized journals indexed in globally recognized databases such as Scopus and Web of Science.

A significant contribution to the development of the Faculty’s research activities is made by the Laboratory of Mathematical Chemistry, headed by Prof. Ovanes Mekenyan, DSc, whose funding is entirely supported by revenues from international projects. The laboratory’s research focuses on mathematical methods for predicting the toxicity of chemical compounds and modeling metabolism. The Laboratory of Mathematical Chemistry develops software for (eco)toxicity assessment and creates chemical databases.
